Assisi is in central Italy in the region of Umbria and province of Perugia. It was the birthplace of St Francis (1181- 1226), a well known saint and a patron saint of Italy. It is now a Unesco Heritage Site with many churches and places linked to St Francis. The largest building is the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and one of the smallest is the church San Damiano.
